Telephone Triage Books

Books by Sheila Wheeler

Sheila Wheeler has written four telephone triage books — a training manual and a three-volume set of Adult and Pediatric Telephone Triage Guidelines (School Age and Infant-child). Wheeler’s 1993 training manual has become a classic in the field. This training manual focuses on how to perform telephone triage, and  is a unique combination text/audiotape/workbook. It essentially launched telehealth as a subspecialty in 1993. It remains the classic “how to” and “go to” training manual for the field.

From 1993 to 1995, Ms Wheeler served as Editor-In-Chief for a 25-member Task Force to develop the first and only paper-based version of age-based, patient-centered, 5-Tier telephone triage guidelines (protocols).  Both training manual and Adult guidelines include audio CDs, each with re-enactments of  10 different actual telephone triage cases, with follow-up analysis and critique of each call and suggestions for improved practice.
